Journal 9 - "Taming the Chaos" NETS-T 2

Johnson, Doug. "Taming the Chaos ." Learning and Leading with Technology 38.3 (2010): 20-3. Web. 8 Dec 2010. <http://www.iste.org/learn/publications/learning-and-leading/digital-edition-november.aspx>.

This article discussed the issue that educators have with students when they use their personal technologies in the classroom during instruction time. Johnson noted that while these technologies can be a big distraction in the classroom, banning them altogether is not the best idea. Instead why not have the students use these technologies in a way that enhances their learning and keeps them engaged.

Question #1: How can student who live in low income areas participate in the same kind of online communities when they might not have access to a computer at home or or at school?
Students that come from low income families and neighborhoods could go to the public library and use the computers, though teachers would need to give ample time to complete these assignments. Enough time would be needed to ensure that every student had more than one opportunity to get on to a computer.

Question #2: Why is it important to change the model of education at all by the integration of technology?
It is important to change the way we view technology in education because the internet is becoming a  rapidly growing source of information and a way of communicating with others. If we as educators continue to ignore these advancements that have happened since education was created we will soon find our education structures worthless. They would be considered worthless because we would not be prepping out students with the proper knowledge to be successful in this day and age. Change needs to occur so the whole education system does not fall apart.

Journal 8- "Culture of Collaboration" NETS-T5

McCombs, Brenda. "Culture of Collaboration ."Learning and Leading with Technology 38.3 (2010): 10-3. Web. 7 Dec 2010. <http://www.iste.org/learn/publications/learning-and-leading/digital-edition-november.aspx>.

This article is about how this school district in North Carolina had to rethink there whole view of education. They did this through the integration of technology by using different forms of assessment for students and teachers, and focusing on a more collaborative effort from the teachers. They were also able to provide the teachers with new technology equipment such as new laptops and interactive whiteboards from a grant they had received. The author went on to say how successful the new changes were as the students test scores rose significantly.

Question#1: Can teachers implement a this more collaborative approach to teaching without grants?
I keep hearing over and over again how education needs to be reformed and changed to have relevance in todays society. Though I rarely hear, except for a few exceptions here and there, that there is anything being done about it. Those few exceptions that I mentioned are generally the schools with enough funding to revamp the system. Though money is needed for new supplies, such as new laptops and other materials, no  money is needed to collaborate with teachers within the same schools. While some may argue that many teachers need training, there are so many free educational technology tools on the internet that the teachers could work on discovering the tools together and get to talking and collaborating together. Teachers need to start the process even though money may not be readily available they need to move forward and work with what they got.

Question#2:If students scores go up as much as 21% why aren't more schools adapting a more collaborative approach to teaching?
While I think it is primarily the responsibility of the teacher come up with more engaging twenty-first century material for the students.I also believe that the school should work together to provided these different aspects into the classrooms of all students.

Journal 7: My Personal Learning Network - NETS-T 5

This is my personal Learning plan, which consists of several different networks that I can use a resources for furthering my knowledge in education.

1. Write a few sentences explaining what your personal learning network is and how it will help you as a classroom teacher.
My personal learning network (PLN) consists of different networking sites that can be found on the internet. These networks are built communities where people with like interests can converse and share information form all over the world. My PLN will help me as a teacher in incorporating the use of technology in the classroom and get new ideas for my lesson plans. I can also work to share my own ideas with others and converse with other educators to make myself an informed and all around better teacher.
2. Discuss your use of Twitter, including who is in your network and why, and your participation in an educational chat (list the topic discussed and what you learned)
I have used twitter to follow and connect with people who are in the field of education and discuss relevant issues and topics related to education. When I participated in the edchat I choose to follow several people who expressed interesting points that on the topic of whether education was broken or just outdated. While I was not brave enough to post or retweet in the discussion yet, I was able to observe and learn how it works and see how easy it is to participate have a conversation with others. From the actual discussion itself I learned that people have many different ideas on how education is and how it needs to be improved and many believe completely reformed. It was interesting to see what all the teachers had to say, a lot of teachers are not happy with what little money and time is spent on the professional development. Many also expressed the need for more time to collaborate with other teachers to better their ideas and lessons. In the future I will have to get a tweetdeck or something similar to it because the conversation was hard to follow at times with new tweets coming in every few seconds.
3. Discuss your use of Delicious, your Delicious network, and describe what you tagged "PLN"and why (there should already be a link to your Delicious Tag Roll on your blog)
I absolutely love delicious! It is a helpful way to gather, tag, and keep tabs on multiple websites. It a great way to keep track of research and you can view others research as and follow them if you like their findings. My delicious network will help me keep track of different resources and blogs that I can use in the future for teaching and my own learning. I have flag other people in delicious who bookmark things that I think I can benefit from. I bookmarked a educational news blog and several other web pages that contain helpful information and even more links that will lead me to different blogs and sites. I really liked the math website I found it compiles hundreds of different lesson plans, games, online tools for all grade levels.
4. Discuss which digital discussion forum you joined, add the badge to your blog, and reflect on the blog post, video, or article you explored.
I joined the Educator's PLN discussion forum and watched a video on changing education paradigms. It was interesting as I never gave thought to how education was created during the enlightenment period and during the industrial revolution. The point of the video was that since school was the way we live and do things is vastly different and this old way of education does not fit as well as it did back in the industrial revolution days.

Journal 6 - "Change Agent" NETS-T 5

This article talked about a need for change in education today. It persuades the reader into thinking education today is outdated and educators need to be focusing on a way to bring the idea of life long learning through the use of technology into the everyday classroom. Will Richardson believes that students should be taught how to be network literate, and it is the job of the educators to make sure that the students know how to use these new network resources as tools for learning. He also stresses that students need to have modeled before them how to appropriately engage on internet social sites. Overall, he thinks the emphasis in education should change to teaching students the learning process rather than feeding them all this facts and stats of knowledge to help them learn.

Question#1: Why is there such a slow move to the use of the internet world inside the classroom as a tool for learning?

When I think about implementing Will Richardson's ideas into the classroom I cannot help but think that parents may not want their children to have access to social networking sites. I think that in order to implement his plan effectively we need a generation of parents and teachers who see the value of such such sites as excellent resources for communicating and learning with others. I think that it would be awesome to get kids involved in different networks to enhance their learning. Although, I feel that since the internet has such a wide range of possibilities teachers have been hesitant to use these tools. I also foresee parents having a problem with the access their child has to certain information and the access the rest of the internet world will have to their child's ideas at young ages.

Question #2: How do we convince parents and colleagues that the internet and the tools it provides that enhance the learning process out way the dangers of the use of internet?

I think that there are still so many people out there who did not grow up using the internet and feel that it is not an important tool for learning. I think that if the advocates of using technology spent time with the older generations and teaching them how they could benefit from the all the different resources (i.e. twitter, delicious, ect.) that they would begin to see the value of it.

Journal 4 - "Computing in the Clouds" NETS-T 5

Johnson, D. (2010). Computing in the clouds. Learning and Leading with Technology, 37(4), Retrieved from http://www.iste.org/learn/publications/learning-and-leading/digital-edition-december-janruary-2009-2010.aspx

In the article Johnson talked about the economic and practical advantages of using programs such as Google documents to make documents as opposed to using Microsoft Word. The advantage of this is that it is free and you do not waste any space on your hard drive by using it. Your work can also be found on any computer that has internet access, as all your work is saved online. Computing in the clouds also allows school districts to save money in moving from computers to netbooks, which are small computers with limited memory, hence the need for online computing, that are affordable.

Question #1: Would it be practical to ask parents to buy netbooks for their students, as mentioned of possibly occurring in the future in the article?
Unless, the price drops significantly from the 400 dollars someone would pay for it now then no. It is not fair to ask of students and their parents to come up with money for such a device for not all families can afford to spend their money on these items. Though I do think that schools can suggest that parents get them for their children, but the school needs to be able to provide the netbooks to those who cannot afford it.

Question #2: Would it beneficial for the students if in implementing this cloud computing they are never exposed to programs such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint?
I think that it would not benefit the students if we neglected to expose them to the other programs out there on computers especially since these programs are so frequently used today. Though maybe in a couple of years the systems will be a thing of the past, but if there are any other alternate way I think it is important to be aware of them and explore them.

Journal 3 - "Bring the World into Your Classroom" NETS-T 2

McDermon, L. (2010). Bring the world into your classroom. Learning and Leading with Technology,38(2), Retrieved from http://www.iste.org/learn/publications/learning-and-leading/digital-edition-september-october.aspx

The author discussed how to incorporate videoconferencing in the classroom to share information with students from different parts of the world. McDermon also mentioned that it could be like going to a museum without actually going anywhere. You can also get historians and other professionals to videoconference with the class. The author express how this is any excellent way to expand students learning of the world around them, as they can get information and ideas from people in different areas than their own.

Question #1:How could I implement videoconferencing in the classroom?
I think that it would be really cool to have the students put on a play that they could present to another class on something they learn during the year. The presentation would be a class project full with costumes and lines memorized and rehearsed. I think the students could have a lot of fun with this project and they could learn a lot about the given subject of the play.

Question #2: How could I fund or find away to get the materials necessary for such a project?
I could ask around the community if there is anyway we could borrow the video camera and their services to help actually film the students. I could also talk to the principle, other teachers and parents for support. I would also ask if they had any ideas on how to make this a possibility in the classroom.

Journal 2 - "Join the Flock!" & "Enhance Your Twitter Experience" NETS-T 5

Ferguson, H. (2010). Join the flock. Learning and Leading with Technology37(8), Retrieved from http://www.iste.org/learn/publications/learning-and-leading/digital-edition-june-july-2010.aspx

Miller, S.M. (2010). Enhance your twitter experience.Learning and Leading with Technology37(8), Retrieved from http://www.iste.org/learn/publications/learning-and-leading/digital-edition-june-july-2010.aspx

The article written by Ferguson is a how to article on the workings of Twitter. She goes into detail about how to best utilize this tool to engage in furthering your learning in education and sharing your own ideas. The author expressed that in order to get the most out of Twitter you have to dedicate time to it, like you would a relationship. The article written by Miller goes on to explain how to organize your tweets through different managing programs such as tweetdeck. These organizers help you keep your lists and research organized into different groupings. Another big portion of her article was spent on defining terms that correlate with Twitter. Both authors shared a enthusiasm and appreciation for this tool and expressed how much their students and they themselves have benefited from using Twitter.

Question#1: How can Twitter be used in the classroom?
The teacher can use Twitter to communicate to students by using lists and or hash marks specific to your class that each student could look up to receive information. Another way the students could use Twitter is for research. They could look up tags and lists that pertain to the topic that they are researching, to gain a better understanding of their topic.

Question#2: Is Twitter a safe medium to use?
In regards to safety, I do not think that it is the best source of information because there is no filter to what the students are exposed to. You can explore through any account on twitter that is viewable and there is no telling what someone can say. I think that it would be awesome if twitter could build a separate forum that was for students and children specifically. Though if a teacher just models the use of Twitter for the class you would not run into this problem in the classroom.

School 2.0 Reflection Tool NETS-T 5

The NETS-T that I investigated was Standard 4, which states promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility. The website I checked out was a free technology toolkit for UDL (Universal Design for learning) in classrooms. It is an awesome sight that has a wealth of information on different subject such as math, writing , reading and research. In a nutshell it is a website that complies a variety of different websites that can be used a supplement in education. For example, one of the writing links is a spelling website were students can type in their vocabulary words and get tested on them online just like they would in class. In fact the website speaks the word and then uses it in a sentence, and then the test taker is expected to write spell out the word. It's like a mock spelling test. Another cool thing I found in the research section was a program called Evernote, which is a program much like delicious website that helps organize one's research. The only thing is it appears you have to have Mac to use the program. I can see both of these particular programs implemented in a classroom setting to help students learn the material at hand through the use of technology. I also think it will help expose the students to technology and the internet and help show them what it has to offer.

This was an activity that I did to learn more about the NETS-T standards and learn how I could implement them in the classroom.

Andrea's Introduction ... WOOO! :0)

Hello Classmates! My name is Andrea Goetz and I was born and raised in Oceanside, California. Having said this I have lived in the same house all my life, hopefully one day I'll find a way out. Though because of this stability I went to school in the same school district from 1st grade to high school. I was home school for Kindergarden, though they sent me off to public school the following year. I attended Hope elementary School, and for a brief period Buena Vista Elementary because of new classroom size reduction policies. Then I went on to Valley Middle School and Carlsbad High School. After High School I went straight here to CSUSM and have been here for about two years. I'm now a Junior and looking forward to getting this semester of classes under my belt.

I've had a fair amount of experience with technology throughout my life. I'm very familiar with both Mac and PC computers and understand how to use the majority of the programs on them. In High School I had some experience with photoshop in a photography class I took and I learned how to do some cool things on there images and photos. I'm also not the one who shies away from technology, so if it's new I do not know how to use it I take it upon myself to figure it out. I look forward to learning more about technology, computers, and how to integrate these things into the classroom this semester!

Upon reading the CSUSM College of Education Statement I'm proud to learn under such terms that seek to prepare us to be the very best we can be to those we will teach in the future. I also like that it states " 'life-long' learning", for as future educators we must constantly be willing and open to learn more to be successful in life. Unfortunately, when I applied to CSUSM I was not sure what my major was going to be so this is the first time (from what I can remember anyway) that I have read it. Though I'm very excited to continue my education as Liberal Studies as my major.
