Journal 4 - "Computing in the Clouds" NETS-T 5
Johnson, D. (2010). Computing in the clouds. Learning and Leading with Technology, 37(4), Retrieved from http://www.iste.org/learn/publications/learning-and-leading/digital-edition-december-janruary-2009-2010.aspx
In the article Johnson talked about the economic and practical advantages of using programs such as Google documents to make documents as opposed to using Microsoft Word. The advantage of this is that it is free and you do not waste any space on your hard drive by using it. Your work can also be found on any computer that has internet access, as all your work is saved online. Computing in the clouds also allows school districts to save money in moving from computers to netbooks, which are small computers with limited memory, hence the need for online computing, that are affordable.
Question #1: Would it be practical to ask parents to buy netbooks for their students, as mentioned of possibly occurring in the future in the article?
Unless, the price drops significantly from the 400 dollars someone would pay for it now then no. It is not fair to ask of students and their parents to come up with money for such a device for not all families can afford to spend their money on these items. Though I do think that schools can suggest that parents get them for their children, but the school needs to be able to provide the netbooks to those who cannot afford it.

Question #2: Would it beneficial for the students if in implementing this cloud computing they are never exposed to programs such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint?
I think that it would not benefit the students if we neglected to expose them to the other programs out there on computers especially since these programs are so frequently used today. Though maybe in a couple of years the systems will be a thing of the past, but if there are any other alternate way I think it is important to be aware of them and explore them.
Journal 3 - "Bring the World into Your Classroom" NETS-T 2
McDermon, L. (2010). Bring the world into your classroom. Learning and Leading with Technology,38(2), Retrieved from http://www.iste.org/learn/publications/learning-and-leading/digital-edition-september-october.aspx
The author discussed how to incorporate videoconferencing in the classroom to share information with students from different parts of the world. McDermon also mentioned that it could be like going to a museum without actually going anywhere. You can also get historians and other professionals to videoconference with the class. The author express how this is any excellent way to expand students learning of the world around them, as they can get information and ideas from people in different areas than their own.
Question #1:How could I implement videoconferencing in the classroom?
I think that it would be really cool to have the students put on a play that they could present to another class on something they learn during the year. The presentation would be a class project full with costumes and lines memorized and rehearsed. I think the students could have a lot of fun with this project and they could learn a lot about the given subject of the play.
Question #2: How could I fund or find away to get the materials necessary for such a project?
I could ask around the community if there is anyway we could borrow the video camera and their services to help actually film the students. I could also talk to the principle, other teachers and parents for support. I would also ask if they had any ideas on how to make this a possibility in the classroom.

Journal 2 - "Join the Flock!" & "Enhance Your Twitter Experience" NETS-T 5
Ferguson, H. (2010). Join the flock. Learning and Leading with Technology, 37(8), Retrieved from http://www.iste.org/learn/publications/learning-and-leading/digital-edition-june-july-2010.aspx
Miller, S.M. (2010). Enhance your twitter experience.Learning and Leading with Technology, 37(8), Retrieved from http://www.iste.org/learn/publications/learning-and-leading/digital-edition-june-july-2010.aspx
The article written by Ferguson is a how to article on the workings of Twitter. She goes into detail about how to best utilize this tool to engage in furthering your learning in education and sharing your own ideas. The author expressed that in order to get the most out of Twitter you have to dedicate time to it, like you would a relationship. The article written by Miller goes on to explain how to organize your tweets through different managing programs such as tweetdeck. These organizers help you keep your lists and research organized into different groupings. Another big portion of her article was spent on defining terms that correlate with Twitter. Both authors shared a enthusiasm and appreciation for this tool and expressed how much their students and they themselves have benefited from using Twitter.
Question#1: How can Twitter be used in the classroom?
The teacher can use Twitter to communicate to students by using lists and or hash marks specific to your class that each student could look up to receive information. Another way the students could use Twitter is for research. They could look up tags and lists that pertain to the topic that they are researching, to gain a better understanding of their topic.
Question#2: Is Twitter a safe medium to use?
In regards to safety, I do not think that it is the best source of information because there is no filter to what the students are exposed to. You can explore through any account on twitter that is viewable and there is no telling what someone can say. I think that it would be awesome if twitter could build a separate forum that was for students and children specifically. Though if a teacher just models the use of Twitter for the class you would not run into this problem in the classroom.
